According to Microsoft, you need to run iTunes 11 using the compatibility mode which I tried it but still did now work. Then I read another forum to disconnect the USB cable and stop 'Apple Mobile Device', plug your phone, and startup the service. It still did not work. After trial and error, I stopped all apple services, uninstalled the unknown USB driver, ran compatibility mode, started up all services and fired up iTunes 11 without my phone plugged in. Finally, I plugged in my phone and iTunes immediately recognized it.

This method was somewhat unorthodox but it worked. Hope this can help others using Windows 8 & iPhone 5.
