All right, it's probably bad form to answer one's own question, but I did come up with a solution. First, I had to disable the device, the Wi-Fi adapter in this case.
Then, I had to disconnect it from the system and shut down the computer. There is a chance that the existing driver, even though it is disabled, will interfere with the shut down process. It did for me; I had to manually, press the off switch, shut down the computer. After shutting down, I restarted and uninstalled the drivers.
